Forsake Them Not
Helping needy Holocaust survivors with financial aid and Christian love
Forsake Them Not is a special project extending the Church's love to hundreds of precious Holocaust Survivors. The survivors' hearts are still sore with each horrible memory from the holocaust, and now doubly burdened as they see the current crisis in Israel.
Helping needy Holocaust survivors with financial aid and Christian love
"...their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick." (Lamentations 4:8)
Forsake Them Not is a special project extending the Church's love to hundreds of precious Holocaust Survivors. The survivors' hearts are still sore with each horrible memory from the holocaust, and now doubly burdened as they see the current crisis in Israel.
"Mostly we cry in private, if we cry at alland so we struggle daily with solitude, with unexpected sadness, and with rage depending on the reminders that may come at any momentwe find ourselves thrust again into a world of Jew-hatred...."
"Many of us are Seniors by society's measure. But we cannot retire, not with what we know, not with the awareness that we have. It took many years to understand that the tiny world of our survival was part of a larger world surrounded by barbed wire. We lived together and died together in what some has described as the 'Concentration Camp Universe.' It was a world of chaos and death in which decisions and choices were not real choices, but an artifact of the cruel rules of that universeit was a universe of death that defied human understanding and belief" (quotes by Robert Krell, M.D., child survivor)
CFI's dedicated Holocaust Team reaches out with love and compassion to these dear ones who have suffered so much. Many live in constant fear in their sunset years; it is really difficult for most of these elderly ones.
 Soothing Sorrow
"Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God." (Isaiah 40:1)
Sorrow has been heavy to bear and it is our privilege to lovingly comfort them during these difficult days. Often all we do is listen, hold them in our arms, and wipe away the tears. Time and again survivors tell us, "We didn't know there are people like you in the world!"
Never before have we ever experienced such a welcome or such an openness as now. Doors have flung wide open, opportunities have swelled, and hearts are responding to receive our help. Please pray for us on the front lines and help support the work of the Lord; we are His arms of comfort and His hands of mercy. Many are beginning to look unto God as we tell them of His love and His mercy.
Sharing Their Pain
"...weep with them that weep" (Romans 12:15)
From the painful suffering of Job, and the way his friends tried to console him, we can learn a basic principle about comforting those who are going through deep trials. It was a comforter's capacity to be sympathetic and the ability to understand and help, more than a talent for using words, that Job longed for when his friends began trying to correct him.
This is the kind of sympathy and comfort that ministers to Survivors and to all Jewish people in Israel. The CFI Holocaust team often feels inadequate in the face of the suffering each survivor has gone through. Often fighting back tears, with lumps in our throats we say to ourselves, "what can we do?"
But we have found that just being there, having us with them to share their deepest sorrows and sensing the love of the Lord in us...they open the painful door of remembering to us. The presence of the Lord draws many and compels them to want us to return again and again into their homes. The language of God's love speaks louder than our words. As we "weep with those who weep" we must begin by sharing their pain and sorrow that is too heavy to bear alone.
Our Prayer
"For we are labourers together with God..." (1 Corinthians 3:9)
Yes, the magnitude of emotional trauma these real people endured is etched upon their memories, never to be forgotten. Many came to Israel having lived through the horrible catastrophe with their hearts completely broken. Now, over fifty years later, they are frequently reliving those days and needing special love and care. Some are living under the poverty line, not receiving extra financial assistance because they do not meet the exact criteria required to release government funds to them. The CFI team visits survivors during the winter months and often discovers them sitting bundled in their cold flats, afraid to use any heat because of the extra costs involved.
It is our prayer that the worldwide Church will join with us in the personal sorrow of their broken lives and ask how to be of help. It is a time in Jewish history when they are facing another hateful period of world condemnation. "...you have borne the shame of the nations." (Ezekiel 36:6)
"I consider this ministry to be one of the nearest to the heart of God. I believe the Survivors are special treasures of the Lord, saved for His purpose. If I had nothing else to do and no other responsibilities, I would give the rest of my life to reaching the Survivors. They are truly worth it all!" –Sharon Sanders
"...neither shouldest thou have rejoiced over the children of Judah in the day of their destruction...nor have laid hands on their substance..." (Obadiah 1:12-13)
