On Friday evening, 27th January 2023, worshippers in a synagogue in Jerusalem were attacked by a 21-year old Arab resident of East Jerusalem wielding an automatic weapon. Seven people died in the attack and another three were seriously injured, including a 15-year old boy.
One particularly grievous aspect of this attack is that it came on the evening of International Holocaust Memorial Day, when people around the world remember the systematic murder of more than six million Jews by the Nazi Germans and their collaborators.
But perhaps more grievous is the fact that the deaths of seven Jewish civilians in a terrorist attack prompted rejoicing in the West Bank and Gaza, with videos appearing on social media of celebrations in Ramallah and Nablus.
