Chad Opens Embassy in Israel

The President of Chad, a Muslim-majority country, opened its first embassy in Israel on Thursday, four years after the countries renewed ties after a decades-long separation.

While most Israelis may never have heard of Chad, it could be an important partner for Israel in demonstrating the benefits of a good relationship.

Chad is a poor country, landlocked, and largely ignored. But for Israel it is important not just because it is strategically located and has oil reserves.

Israel is already helping Chad in the areas of development work, defence and intelligence - essential for a government fighting Islamist rebels.

One example is the building of a new trauma centre in the hospital of Chad’s capital N’Djamena. But there are many other ways in which Israel will be able to help.
