On Monday 3rd July the Israeli government sent hundreds of troops into the Palestinian city of Jenin as part of the largest security operation of its kind for 20 years. That is because the last 12 months have seen Jenin used as the launching place for as many as 106 terror attacks that have killed 15 people and wounded many more.
Named ‘House and Garden’ this security operation is intended to break the terror infrastructure in Jenin, including laboratories where improvised explosive devices are produced.
By the beginning of the second day, 120 wanted men had been arrested, three explosives laboratories discovered (including a store for hundreds of explosive devices and several thousand grenades), and two underground shafts had been found at a mosque, which were used to store weapons.
Palestinian sources said 10 men had been killed and another 20 were in serious condition.
This operation is limited to Jenin, whilst the rest of the disputed territories remained relatively quiet, allowing 70,000 Palestinian workers to enter into Israel as normal on Monday.
