Zvika Klein, Editor-in-Chief of the Jerusalem Post newspaper, reports that Israeli officials believe there is no food shortage in Gaza as such. But there are people who are going hungry because Hamas continues to take control of the incoming food and the people aren’t able pay the prices then demanded on the black market.
Despite Israel’s progress against Hamas terrorists in the fighting, it seems the organisation still controls around 70-80 percent of the area. When food enters the Gaza Strip, gangs are said to take possession of it at gunpoint, and it later goes on sale in the markets.
This should be grossly offensive to most people in the donor countries. The food provided should be given to the Gazan people free of charge. But there is much evidence that Hamas are profiting from it; and not only profiting financially, but also gaining more propaganda against the Israelis by accusing them of creating the shortage.
Here, Honest Reporting confirm that there is much disinformation published about the situation. A lot of food has entered and is awaiting better distribution around the Gaza Strip, where “hundreds of trucks are piling up.”
