Hamas terrorists have returned to Al Shifa hospital in Gaza City to use it as a base for attacking Israeli forces in the area. That prompted the Israel Defence Forces to launch a new, targeted operation in the early hours of Monday morning, 18th March, arresting around 80 terrorists.
Once again, the terrorists used patients at the hospital as human shields when the Israeli special forces took control of the hospital compound. Those Israeli forces included Arabic speakers and medics so that they could communicate with staff and help care for patients. They say one soldier was lightly wounded during the raid.
There will inevitably be more protests about the Israelis conducting a military operation against a hospital. But the position with regard to hospitals and the international laws of war is set out clearly in a Newsweek article by urban warfare expert John Spencer. It is Hamas terrorists who are breaking those laws with complete disregard for the lives of staff and patients at the hospitals in the Gaza Strip.
