In a significant change of intelligence assessments, Israel now expects a direct attack from Iran within the next few days, before ceasefire negotiations are due to resume on Thursday.
Sources indicate there is a ‘debate’ going on between Iran’s new president and the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps as to exactly what the response to Haniyeh’s death will be.
The Israelis and Americans are clearly taking this seriously, with Yoav Gallant updating US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin, who then instructed the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group to accelerate its progress to the region.
He also took the most unusual step of announcing the deployment of submarine USS Georgia to the Middle East. Presumably to increase the strength of deterrence against an attack.
But another likely source of attack on Israel is Hezbollah in Lebanon. It has vowed to make a significant attack in response to Israel’s killing of Fuad Shukr, a senior commander in their armed forces.
And now, Lebanese media reports Hezbollah has evacuated its headquarters from the suburb of Dahieh in Beirut, not just senior military personnel but the entire operation, including its political personnel.
All of this seems to have prompted the leaders of the UK, Germany, and France to issue an urgent joint statement that "there can be no further delay" in negotiating a ceasefire in Gaza, warning Iran and its allies that there must not be any further escalation of the conflict.
However, Hamas announced on Sunday that it will not attend the next round of ceasefire talks planned for Thursday, saying:
"The movement calls on the mediators to present a plan to implement what was agreed upon by the movement on July 2nd, 2024, based on Biden’s vision and the UN Security Council resolution."
