Sitting on Israel’s northern coastline, the city of Haifa is sometimes described as the unofficial capital of the north and is renowned for the peaceful coexistence of its Arab and Jewish citizens.
It is the location of the Rambam Health Care Campus, whose staff are well aware that the city is a prime target for Hezbollah which has recently threatened a major attack on Israel in response to the killing of its chief of staff.
The Jews and Arabs on the campus’ staff have worked hard over years and more recent months to convert the underground garage into a secure location for treating patients.
What was basically a 1,500-car garage was originally converted following the Second Lebanon War with Hezbollah in 2006. It has been ready for a long time but has seen renewed preparations during the fighting with Hamas and Hezbollah.
Covering three floors, the $140 million Fortified Underground Emergency Hospital has a capacity for more than 2,000 beds. One of those three floors has been cleared of cars over the last 10 months and put on standby, ready for full use within eight hours.
