October 2023 Massacre Remembered

Commemorations of the October 7th Massacre have been held around the world, including one in Hyde Park, London, where thousands of people gathered on Sunday to wave hundreds of Israeli flags and many placards with pictures of the hostages who remain in captivity.

The mother of Emily Damari was one of those who addressed the event – Emily is the only British-Israeli hostage still held by Hamas.

The most poignant events were held in Israel, where despite their weakened state after a year of fighting, Hamas managed to fire five rockets at central Israel as a reminder of what they did on the same day last year.

During the course of the last 12 months there has been much discussion of what went wrong with Israel’s border security on that day.

A central factor seems to be that complacency about Hamas had settled in with most of Israel’s leaders, along with the belief that Hamas could be contained in Gaza and the border kept quiet by various means.

With a war now active on seven fronts, the time is not right for a full analysis of what went wrong. Today the focus is on commemoration of that awful day one year ago.

This brief reminder of the main events is presented by Sky News’ Yalda Hakim, reporting from the site of the Nova music festival.
