After several hours of increasing speculation on Thursday afternoon, the Israelis confirmed that their forces had killed Yahya Sinwar during fighting in the southern city of Rafah. It was not a targeted killing, but simply a fight with a small group of terrorists.
In a speech confirming Sinwar’s death, Benjamin Netanyahu appealed to the people of Gaza to take the opportunity to break free from the tyrannical rule of the terrorist organisation.
He called on everyone who is holding Israeli hostages to lay down their weapons and return the hostages in exchange for being allowed to leave the Gaza Strip. And in the same way, he said whoever harms the hostages, Israel "will reckon with him."
Addressing Israelis, Netanyahu said,
"Evil has suffered a heavy blow, but the task before us is not yet complete."
And to the families of the hostages he said:
"This is an important moment in the war. We will continue with all our strength
until the return home of all of your loved ones, who are our loved ones.
This is our highest commitment. This is my highest commitment."
