Yesterday, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) reported ‘dismantling’ underground Hezbollah facilities that the terrorists had built beneath a cemetery in southern Lebanon. They included command rooms, living quarters, and stores that were still filled with weapons and combat equipment when they were discovered.
The IDF have been combing the whole area of Lebanon just north of the border with Israel and have found many tunnel shafts. Several of those shafts led to this particular compound, which was one kilometre long and located one and a half kilometres from the border.
Rather than blowing it up – something the Israelis have done with many other terrorist structures – the Defence Ministry`s Engineering and Construction Directorate led a substantial operation involving hundreds of trucks and concrete mixers to pour in approximately 4,500 cubic metres of concrete.
While the IDF didn’t make this explicit, they probably chose to fill the compound with concrete, rather than blow it up, due to the presence of the cemetery above.
