For more than a year, Israeli and foreign journalists have only been able to enter the Gaza Strip under the auspices of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF). They were only taken to places clear of civilians to observe what the IDF had found.
Hamas has exerted strict control over reporting from Gaza since it came to power in 2007 and threatens journalists who report on its terrorist operations. During the current war with Israel, Hamas have only allowed Al Jazeera to report from within the Strip. Al Jazeera is known to have a close relationship with Hamas, presenting it as a resistance movement.
But on Sunday, Israel’s Channel 12 broadcast heartbreaking footage of reporter Ohad Hemo talking to Gazans who were fleeing from the fighting in the Jabalia refugee camp in the north of the Gaza Strip. Unusually, many of them spoke out against Hamas, blaming them for their suffering and praising Israelis who had helped them.
A number of the Gazan men showed leg injuries and explained that Hamas terrorists had shot them when they tried to collect aid packages for their families.
One young woman shouted to Ohad that Hamas destroyed their lives, their children’s lives, and their houses; even saying that they would like the Israelis to rule the Gaza Strip.
This version of the Channel 12 footage posted by All Israel News has English subtitles.
